WRITING FOR TELEVISION

with Eric Siegel

The goal of this workshop is to give writers the tools necessary to develop a television pilot. We will learn about the differences and between comedy and drama, and between episodic and serialized shows. We will work on coming up with and refining an idea, discuss structure, character, dialogue and tone, and talk about the realities of the television business today from what it’s like to actually sell a show to how to function effectively in a writers’ room. The course will be a combination of lectures and exercises to help generate and refine ideas. There will also be time for individual discussions. This workshop is suitable for writers at any stage in their development process.

PACKING FOR YOUR SCREENPLAY JOURNEY

with Duncan Birmingham

Best for: Writers who want to write their first screenplay but don’t know where to start as well as writers feeling stuck with their script who want a way to revitalize their story.  The goal of this two-session course is to give writers the tools and strategies to best prepare for that first day (i.e. pack for your screenplay journey) when they sit down to write page one. We will focus on getting to the heart of your story idea by helping you to construct or refine a logline (a summary that’s only a sentence or two but is the most important part of your screenplay). We’ll then learn about different outlining strategies and do a few exercises as a way to test your logline to make sure your story summary is in the best shape for you to launch into your new screenplay or rewrite your current script. The course will be a combination of lecturing and exercises to help generate and refine ideas.
